The gas category just had its most chaotic six weeks in years. The Citi Custom Cash, the card most gas roundups still recommend first, closed to new applications on May 28, 2026. Weeks later, Chase added 3x on gas and EV charging to the refreshed Sapphire Preferred. Most of the roundups you will find in a search have not caught up.

I run every card on this page through StackEasy's verified fact registry, where fees and earn rates are logged against issuer terms with a re-verification date. This rewrite was checked on July 3, 2026. Cards we could not verify were dropped, not guessed at.

Here's the plan: the picks that are still open, the warehouse math that decides whether a membership pays for itself, and the EV charging question nobody else answers cleanly.

Quick Answer

The best gas credit card in 2026 is the Costco Anywhere Visa: 4% back on gas and EV charging everywhere, 5% at Costco pumps, on up to $7,000 a year, with no card fee beyond the $65 membership. No warehouse membership? The Wells Fargo Autograph earns an uncapped 3x on gas and EV charging for $0. The old default, the Citi Custom Cash, closed to new applicants on May 28, 2026.

## The 2026 Gas Card Reshuffle

Gas card roundups age badly, and this spring they aged all at once. Three moves rewrote the category between late May and June 2026.

**First, the Citi Custom Cash closed to new applicants.** Citi stopped taking applications on May 28, 2026. That card was the default 5% gas answer for years, paying 5% on your top spending category each billing cycle, on up to $500 in spend. Existing cardholders keep it, and a product change from another Citi card may still work. If you do not already hold one, it's off the board.

**Second, Chase added gas to the Sapphire Preferred.** The June 2026 refresh added 3x on gas and EV charging while keeping the $95 annual fee. That turned a travel card into a legitimate gas pick for the first time.

**Third, EV charging reached parity with gas.** Of the eight gas cards profiled on this page, five now pay their full gas rate on EV charging: the Costco Anywhere Visa at 4%, the PenFed Platinum Rewards at 5x, the Wells Fargo Autograph at 3x, the Chase Sapphire Preferred at 3x, and the Citi Strata Premier at 3x. Three don't: the Sam's Club Mastercard and both Amex Blue Cash cards. Issuers are quietly future-proofing the category, and that changes how long your gas card stays useful.

Gas is one row in our [best credit cards by category rankings](/blog/best-credit-card-by-category-2026). This page is the deep version of that row: the full rate table, the membership break-even math, and the EV question.

## The Best Gas Cards You Can Still Get

**Top pick: Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi.**

- **Reward rate:** 5% on gas at Costco and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging worldwide, on up to $7,000 a year combined, then 1%. Also 3% on restaurants and eligible travel.
- **Card fee:** $0, but you need a paid Costco membership. Gold Star runs $65 a year.
- **Why it wins:** 4% at every station is the highest open everywhere-rate in the registry, and the $7,000 cap covers $583 a month in fuel. Rewards arrive once a year as a certificate you redeem at Costco.

**Best without a membership: Wells Fargo Autograph.**

- **Reward rate:** 3x points on gas stations and EV charging with no cap. The same 3x covers restaurants, travel, transit, popular streaming, and phone plans.
- **Card fee:** $0. Points redeem for cash at 1 cent each, so 3x works out to a straight 3%.
- **Why it wins:** no membership, no cap, no activation calendar. This is the pick I give most people, and it anchors our [best cash back credit cards](/blog/best-cash-back-credit-cards) list for the same reason.

**The 5% chasers: Sam's Club and PenFed.** The Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% back on gas anywhere Mastercard is accepted, on the first $6,000 a year, then 1%. The card itself costs nothing, but membership does: $60 a year for the Club tier since May 2026. Rewards post as Sam's Cash, not a statement credit.

The PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature pays 5x points on gas bought at the pump and on EV charging, with no annual fee. The catch is redemption: points cannot be turned into straight cash back, and NerdWallet values them at roughly 0.85 cents each. Call it about 4% in real value on a good redemption. Anyone can join the credit union with a $5 savings deposit.

PRO TIP

Pay at the pump, not inside. The PenFed card pays 5x only on fuel bought at the pump, and purchases made at the register can code as a convenience store instead of a gas station. The same merchant-code rule is why gas at a superstore sometimes misses your card's gas bonus entirely.

**The Amex angle.** The Blue Cash Everyday earns 3% at U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 a year with no annual fee, and the Blue Cash Preferred pairs 3% on gas and transit with its 6% grocery rate for $95. If groceries already point you at a Blue Cash card, the gas earn rides along free. Just know that Amex's category means U.S. gas stations: EV charging does not earn the bonus on either card.

## The Warehouse Gas Math

Warehouse cards post the biggest numbers, so here's the honest question: does 4% or 5% actually beat a free 3% card once the membership fee counts against it? Run it at $200 a month in gas, which is $2,400 a year.

THE CATCH MOST GAS ROUNDUPS SKIP

Check where the pump sits before you count on any of this. Costco warehouse fuel reliably posts under the wholesale-club merchant code, not the service-station code a general gas card is built to recognize. Sam's Club and BJ's fuel is less consistent: many locations code the same way, but some post as a standalone service station instead, so check your own statement rather than assuming either way. Fill up at a Costco pump with the Wells Fargo Autograph, PenFed Platinum Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier, or either Blue Cash card, and that spend usually will not trigger the card's gas bonus at all. It posts at the card's ordinary, non-bonus rate instead, the same as a random errand. The $72 the Autograph earns below assumes the gas itself is bought at a standalone station, a Shell or a Chevron, not at the pump inside the warehouse lot.

Net gas rewards after membership fee, on $2,400 a year in gas On $2,400 a year in gas bought at a standalone station: the Wells Fargo Autograph nets $72 with no membership, the Sam's Club Mastercard nets $60 after its $60 fee, a flat 2% card nets $48 with no membership, and the Costco Anywhere Visa nets $31 after its $65 fee. Net Gas Rewards After Membership Fee $2,400/year in gas, membership cost subtracted $72 Autograph no membership $60 Sam's Club $60/yr fee $31 Costco Visa $65/yr fee $48 Flat 2% card no membership

The free Autograph nets the most once membership fees are subtracted, but only if that gas is bought at a standalone station, not a warehouse pump.

Charge the full membership against gas alone and the free Autograph wins at $200 a month. That surprises people, and it's the number most gas roundups skip.

The break-evens: against the Autograph's 3%, the Costco card earns 1 extra point per dollar, so it needs $6,500 a year in gas, about $542 a month, before gas alone repays the $65 membership. The Sam's Club card earns 2 extra points, so it needs $3,000 a year, about $250 a month, to cover its $60 fee. Below those lines, the membership has to earn its keep in the aisles, not at the pump.

Already a member? Then the fee is sunk and the math collapses to one rule: the extra earn starts at the first gallon, and the warehouse card wins from day one. So before you apply for anything, answer this honestly: is the warehouse already part of your life, or would you be buying a membership to chase a rate?

NOTE

Every rate and fee on this page was re-verified against issuer terms on July 3, 2026 and logged in StackEasy's card fact registry, including the Custom Cash closure and the Sam's Club membership increase to $60 in May 2026. If an issuer changes a rate tomorrow, its terms page wins.

## EV Charging Is the New Gas Category

Every major gas card refresh since 2025 has bundled EV charging with gas. That's not a coincidence. Issuers can see where fuel spending is heading, and they are future-proofing the category instead of letting it shrink.

Of the eight gas cards profiled on this page, five treat a charging session like a fill-up: the Costco Anywhere Visa at 4%, the PenFed Platinum Rewards at 5x, and the Autograph, Sapphire Preferred, and Strata Premier at 3x. Three don't: the two Amex Blue Cash cards and the Sam's Club Mastercard. The Blue Cash cards' bonus category reads U.S. gas stations, and a charging network is not a gas station. The Sam's Club Mastercard's 5% is scoped to gas purchases only, with no EV charging language in its terms.

One practical warning: charging networks do not all code the same way. Some bill under the EV charging merchant code, others post as utilities or parking. Buy one session with your new card and check how it posts before you count on the bonus.

And here's the part no gas card fixes: most charging happens at home. The U.S. Department of Energy puts home charging at roughly 80% of EV charging, and home charging lands on your electric bill. A gas card earns nothing there. If you drive an EV, the stronger play is a utilities card, like the U.S. Bank Cash+ with 5% on home utilities as a chosen category, plus one parity card for road trips.

If your household runs one gas car and one EV, notice what the Costco card just did: Costco gas, other gas, and public charging all earn under a single $7,000 cap. The gas category is not dying. It's being renamed.

The Right Card, Every Single Fill-Up

A 4% gas card only pays when it's the card you actually reach for. The free StackEasy Chrome extension knows every card in your stack and tells you which one earns the most before you pay.

## Where a Gas Card Sits in Your Stack

Gas is a mid-size category for most households, smaller than people assume. Pull your last three statements and add up the fuel lines before you chase a rate. Most people guess high.

In a stack, the gas card is a layer, never the foundation. The order that works: a flat 2% card as the floor, category cards like gas and groceries on top, and a fee card only when the break-even math clears. If you are new to running multiple cards on purpose, start with [credit stacking 101](/blog/credit-stacking-101) and build the foundation first. Once that stack has more than a couple of category cards in it, our free [credit stacking Starter Kit](https://t.stackeasy.ai/download/credit-stacking-starter-kit.pdf?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=content&utm_campaign=best-credit-card-for-gas&utm_content=starter-kit-inline) has the payment-tracking templates and weekly check-in routine to keep every card, gas included, on schedule.

The failure mode is not picking the wrong gas card. It's holding the right one and paying with your default card at the pump anyway. At $200 a month, the gap between a 4% card and a 1% habit is $72 a year, every year, for one purchase category. Most of the cards on this page also appear in our [best no annual fee credit cards](/blog/best-no-annual-fee-credit-cards) guide, because gas rewards rarely justify a card fee on their own.

Key Takeaways

- The Citi Custom Cash, the old 5% gas default, closed to new applications on May 28, 2026. Every card recommended below is still open.
- Warehouse cards pay the top open gas rates: the Costco Anywhere Visa earns 4% on all gas and EV charging (5% at Costco pumps), and the Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% on the first $6,000 a year.
- Of the eight gas cards profiled here, five earn the same rate on EV charging as they do on gas. The three that don't: both Amex Blue Cash cards and the Sam's Club Mastercard.
- Filling up at a Costco pump with a non-warehouse card usually skips the bonus entirely: it reliably posts under the wholesale-club merchant code, not the service-station code the Autograph, Sapphire Preferred, Strata Premier, PenFed, and Blue Cash cards look for. Sam's Club often codes the same way, so check your statement before assuming the bonus applies.

StackEasy Bottom Line

StackEasy recommends the Costco Anywhere Visa as the best gas card of 2026 if a Costco membership is already part of your life: 4% on all gas and EV charging, up to $7,000 a year, with no card fee. If it's not, skip the membership math and take the Wells Fargo Autograph, an uncapped 3x on gas and EV charging for $0 a year.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best credit card for gas in 2026?

The Costco Anywhere Visa is the best gas card in 2026 if you hold a Costco membership. It earns 5% on gas at Costco and 4% on other gas and EV charging, on up to $7,000 a year combined, with no card fee. Without a warehouse membership, the Wells Fargo Autograph is the best pick: an uncapped 3x on gas and EV charging with no annual fee.

### Is the Citi Custom Cash still available for gas?

No. The Custom Cash closed to new applications on May 28, 2026. Existing cardholders keep the card and its 5% top-category earning, and a product change from another Citi card may still work. New applicants should look at the Costco Anywhere Visa, the Sam's Club Mastercard, or the Wells Fargo Autograph instead.

### Which credit cards still pay 5% on gas?

The Sam's Club Mastercard pays 5% back on gas anywhere Mastercard is accepted, on the first $6,000 a year, with a $60 Sam's Club membership. The PenFed Platinum Rewards pays 5x points at the pump, but the points cannot be redeemed for straight cash and are worth roughly 0.85 cents each. The Costco Anywhere Visa pays 5% only at Costco pumps and 4% everywhere else. Rotating 5% cards only help in quarters when gas actually appears on the calendar.

### What is the best gas credit card with no annual fee?

The Wells Fargo Autograph. It earns an uncapped 3x on gas stations and EV charging, plus the same 3x on restaurants, travel, transit, streaming, and phone plans, with no annual fee. The Blue Cash Everyday from American Express is the runner-up at 3% on U.S. gas stations, capped at $6,000 a year.

### Do gas credit cards earn rewards on EV charging?

Five of the eight gas cards profiled on this page pay their full gas rate on EV charging: the Costco Anywhere Visa (4%), PenFed Platinum Rewards (5x), Wells Fargo Autograph (3x), Chase Sapphire Preferred (3x), and Citi Strata Premier (3x). Three don't: both Amex Blue Cash cards, since their category covers U.S. gas stations only, and the Sam's Club Mastercard, which has no EV charging language in its terms. Charging networks also code inconsistently, so check how your first session posts.

### Will my gas rewards card earn its bonus at Costco or Sam's Club gas pumps?

Usually not, unless it's the Costco Anywhere Visa or the Sam's Club Mastercard. Costco reliably posts gas under a wholesale-club merchant code rather than the service-station code a general gas card looks for. Sam's Club and BJ's fuel coding is less consistent: many locations code the same way, but some post as a standalone service station, so check your own statement. Where the wholesale-club code applies, the Wells Fargo Autograph, PenFed Platinum Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier, and the Amex Blue Cash cards will usually earn only their base, non-bonus rate at that pump. Fill up at a standalone station to collect the advertised bonus on those cards.

### Are gas station brand cards like Shell or Chevron worth it?

Usually not. Brand cards typically give a per-gallon discount, often 5 to 10 cents. At $3.50 a gallon, a 4% cash back card returns 14 cents a gallon and works at every station. A brand card only wins if you fill up at one chain exclusively and its promotion is unusually rich.

### Does the Costco Anywhere Visa work at other gas stations?

Yes. It earns 4% on eligible gas and EV charging anywhere Visa is accepted, not just at Costco, up to $7,000 a year combined. Costco pumps earn 5%. The trade-offs: you need an active Costco membership to keep the card, and rewards arrive once a year as a certificate you redeem at Costco.
